Method 1 – Cardboard Box (safety glasses required)
A great way to smash tiles is in a cardboard box. The shards are contained very well & you can see exactly what you’re doing. Safety glasses are essential.Place your tile face down in the box, and tap with a hammer as hard as you need to. Never hit the front of a tile – it will cause too much damage to the glazing.
Continue smashing the tiles down until you get a good consistency of size. You can either smash all the tiles before you start, putting the shards in separate trays or containers, or just smash them as you go.
Method 2 – Towel method (safety glasses not required)
On a concrete floor, lay your tile face down on one half of an old towel, and fold the other half of the towel over the top.
Smash the tile through the towel with a hammer.
You might have to check a few times to bring the shards down to the size you want, but if you keep folding the towel back down, there won’t be any mess, and the tile will stay together pretty well as shown. |
