• Mosaic making is a very messy business, so it’s important that you find a work area where the odd splash of glue or grout isn’t going to cause problems (carpet & concrete products don’t work well together in the same room!!), Good ventilation & light are also important.• Take your time!! Your project is going to take several hours or more spread out over a few days. Patience & attention to detail will make a big difference to your final product, and will allow you to enjoy the full experience.
• The colours used on the demonstration work may vary from the colours you’re using. Make regular reference to the digitally enhanced version on your cover sheet to ensure your colours are going in the right place.
•By all means put your own stamp on the design by making slight alterations, but be conscious of how you change the area of each colour – you don’t want to be running out of a particular coloured tile. Also, feel free to use your own tiles or tesserae to enhance the piece.
• Don’t be casual with our safety precautions. I’ve had flying shards of tile imbed themselves in my skin – so it’s frightening to think what they could do to an eye! Also, I’ve heard of people having skin irritations from concrete products so use gloves when you can.
• dust from cutting tiles or from concrete products is dangerous if inhaled – please use a mask or respirator if you intend to create mosaics regularly.
• Don’t dispose of concrete products down your drain – it can set and create havoc with your plumbing
