Artist comment: “Elemental Nudes” was created for the “Mosaic Now: works from Italy and Australia” exhibition taking place throughout Victoria June-December 2006.

This is the 50 word summary we gave to accompany the work:-

“Elemental nudes” is inspired by the four elements of Western Astrology – Fire, earth, air & water. I’ve used colour and the poses to express how I understand the manifestation of these elements.

The nudes were the ideal subject for me, as these manifestations are easily noticed in humans.”

For an exhibition like this, I particularly wanted to challenge myself and so have used a new style of cutting and laying tiles on a difficult subject. I cut all my tiles into rods (7.5mm wide) and cut off pieces as I go, using only 4 colours other than black.

I’m very happy with with the resulting depth of the figures and plan to do more work in this style. The next thing I’ll tackle will be a portrait.
