Question from Mel of Melbourne
Hi Brett,I have a few questions about the CFC backing.1. I was wondering what thickness the CFC is that you used for the St Peter chanel? When i look at the photo’s it looks as though its the same thinkness as the tiles.2. I went to Bunnings and they had backing called FC is this the same as CFC? The thickest size in stock was 15mm for $135..is this the same as you use?3. Can thinner CFC be used? i know its pretty flexible and would probably crack the mosaic.

Thanks for your question.
I think we used 9mm CFC for the St Peter Chanel – the pieces weren’t overly large so that worked well. I prefer using 15mm for tabletops and larger 1 piece murals.
I think I pay around $70 per metre by the sheet, so it will depend on the sheet size as to whether it’s the same thing. I somehow doubt you could get standard fibre cement in that thickness, so on the surface it sounds like you’re getting compressed. Just ask them if it’s compressed.
CFC isn’t particularly flexible, so it will totally depend on the size pieces you’re using – I would guess that 9mm is fine if your pieces are 600 x 600 or less. Any bigger I’d consider going a bit thicker. 12mm is probably OK for up to 900 x 900.
The biggest issue with CFC is the weight, so smaller pieces is preferable if possible.
Hope that’s helpful.
